Facebook users set a record of sorts with the New Year celebrations 2011. The social networking site saw 750 million new photos being uploaded during the New Year weekend.
Randi Zuckerberg, the Facebook marketing director (also the founder of Mark Zuckerberg’s sister) reported the astonishing stat in her tweet on twitter. We are trying to extract from Facebook officials what the last record was. It is being assumed that Halloween was the last occasion that witnessed such a huge surge in photo uploads on facebook before this.
Facebook in July confirmed that more than 100 million pictures get uploaded to it every single day.But the figures are obviously higher now. The fact gives context to the astounding number of this record season. In September 2010, Flickr had its 5 billionth photo uploaded. Now, if facebook users continue with the pace they uploaded photos last weekend, this social networking site would surpass Flickr’s record within a week or two. Though the comparison is likely being unfair to Flickr but the volume obviously gives an idea of the scale of the photo uploads on Facebook.
