It is estimated that by the end of 2011, mobile industry globally will be around US $1.3 trillion business. This figure corresponds to 2% of the total global GDP.
The above figures are accounted taking into account everything from data services and networks to apps and handsets. India and China are the main generators of global subscriptions accounting for around 30% of global mobile subscriptions. By the end of this year, India and China together would account for around 6 billion subscriptions. Now that is a huge number. All the above data are a result of research done by Chetan Sharma.

Of the total Mobile Industry, handsets contribute to 15% of the total pie. Main chunk of the pie is devoted to Mobile Infrastructure which has 52% of the total mobile pie. 11% of the total pie is taken by Messaging and 13% is taken up by Apps. These all figures are aligned with Gartner’s predictions.
Mobile Industry – Global Handset Marketshare
Nokia is world-wide leader when it comes to mobile handsets. Nokia currently has general handset market (feature phones + smartphones) of 28%. Nokia is followed by Samsung with 18% market share. It is interesting to note that Apple, which only sells smartphones has a percentage share of 5% in global handset share.

According to the Q1 2011 reports for Global Marketshare, Nokia is the leader in smartphone segment also. It leads the market with a market share of 24%. Nokia is followed by Apple with 18% of the market share. There is significant contribution made by companies such as RIM, Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony Ericsson having 14%, 12%, 10%, 5% and 5% market share respectively.
