India will soon have its own national database of all Mobile IMEI numbers. Telecom Sector regulator Trai proposed this initiative and will put in place the guidelines and mechanisms to create this database. It will also decide the mode of funding for this project.
“Blocking of IMEI is an effective solution to discourage mobile theft in the country as it will prevent the usage of stolen handset which is re-sold in the market to some extent. However, it alone cannot serve the purpose as the handsets can be easily reprogrammed and sold in the market,” the Cellular Operators Association of India , the body representing GSM operators, said in their response to Trai.
The national database will be a great help to law enforcement bodies and emergency services. Apart from this it would help in spotting and reporting of stolen mobile phones. A mobile IMEI number reported to the national database can bu used by telecom companies as a reference point to block the services to the device.
