LOL, which means “Laughing Out Loud” and OMG, which means “Oh My God” or “Oh My Gosh” or “Oh My Goodness” have now been added to Oxford English Dictionary.
Internet has changed the way humans now live and interact with one another. In such circumstances, it becomes necessary to keep on changing and adding the terms in English which are used by general public. If such a thing is not done then the language itself becomes very hard to follow and slowly the language disappears and becomes history because of its incapability to resist change.
English has always been open to changes and modified itself frequently in order to remain in usage. It is one of the most adaptive (adaptive to changes) form of language in the world. Since these words LOL and OMG have been in usage for some time now, so it is better to import these words in the English dictionary.
Oxford English Dictionary defines LOL as “as an interjection.. used chiefly in electronic communications… to draw attention to a joke or humorous statement or to express amusement” . There have been growing usage of LOL and OMG in the internet communications through email, social networking, SMS and even in verbal communications.
Many other such words like ROFL, LMAO are also used highly in the internet, and may also be imported to the English dictionary with time to come. Who knows somewhere in future, we would be communicating in such language which would be using English like Alphabets and called as English but would be very different from the present day English that we use today because of the changes that it would have gone to survive through the sands of time.
