Windows Phone is being rated as the Operating System of the future and many handset manufacturers have begun to switch to the new platform. Samsung had already launched the Omnia 7 long back after its commitment to Microsoft. Recently there’s been, let’s say, a sort of update in it.
Samsung has lately sired Omnia W that runs Windows Phone 7.5 aka Mango. The handset does not have a bad look and also belongs to a reasonable price range. The specifications of Samsung Omnia are given below.

Samsung Omnia W – Body
The handset meets the statement of Samsung as the ‘Plastic handset maker’. The body does not even feel bad though made of plastic. The excellent display is a super AMOLED with a resolution of 480 x 800. It has a bright display with appreciable contrast and colors. The usual trio of Windows buttons exists below the display. The search and the back key are capacitive while the main Windows key is a hardware key. The sensors exist above the display and also a VGA camera which is useless on WP Mango. Hopefully it will of use once the Tango update is available.
The right side of the handset has the power/lock key and the camera key and the left side contains the volume rocker keys. The upper portion contains the 3.5mm audio jack and the bottom carries the microUSB port for charging as well as data synching. At the back is a 5MP camera with a single LED flash along and the speaker next to it. the battery cover at the back is all plastic that gives a brushed metallic look. The handset has a 1500mAh battery above the SIM card slot.
Samsung Omnia W – Windows Phone 7.5
Omnia W has the same User Interface as all the Windows Phone Mango. Samsung hasn’t come up with anything new with the handset. ‘Samsung Apps’ store and the ‘AllShare’ DLNA sharing app are the proprietary apps in the phone.
For those who adore social networking 24×7 will appreciate the various SNS intergration, like all Windows Phone devices. The layout and the UI of the apps is interesting.
The simplicity of the phone seems to work for it. Windows Phone 7.5 with not much settings and features makes the phone handier for those who dislike the complex stuffs like Android or iOS.
Samsung Omnia W – Browser
The browser is smooth and loads pages quite fast. In the speed test Omnia W proved to be better than Galaxy SII and Nokia 701. The HTML content containing pages load quite well. The zoom in and zoom out also works superbly.
Samsung Omnia W – Multimedia
The only flaw with the Windows Phone OS is its lack of multimedia specialties. It is limited to codec support and supports formats like MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+/WMA/AMR-NB audio support and MPEG4/H.263/H.264/WMV video support.
Songs can be loaded only via Zune software that is slightly annoying as everytime one has to listen to a new song he needs to connect to Zune and then transfer it. In the world of wireless communication why stick to cables and softwares for the transfer of data?
The camera takes pretty decent snaps which are backed up well with the auto-focus and LED flash. Omnia W also includes FM radio with RDS support.
Samsung Omnia W – Price
The all new Samsung Omnia W is marked for a price range of Rs. 19,990 (INR).
Conclusion
To conclude it can be said that there’s nothing much to the Windows Phone handset. The phone is not boring but still needs an extra pinch like may be a few more interesting apps, a little more functionality.
The build and the quality are quite satisfying. Considering the price, the responsiveness and the features are good. The handset marked at Rs. 19,990 (INR) is worth the buy if you wish to go for Windows Phone. But for those not interested in the Windows Phone have a lot other options available in the same range.
