Micromax A85 – What’s So Super About This Micromax

Micromax keeps up with its image of making affordable phones for the average Indian customer. But this time it’s competing with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S2 and LG Optimus 2X with its dual core phone called Superphone A85.

The Superphone A85 is so far the most expensive phone by Micromax and the specs tell you why it is so expensive.

  • 1 GHz Nvdia Tegra 2 dual core processor
  • 3.8 inch TFT screen,
  • 5 MP camera, 0.3 MP front camera
  • Android 2.2 (yeah, they still do that),
  • 8 GB memory, 512 MB RAM
  • 1500 mAh battery.

Micromax’s audacity of calling the A85 a super phone may backfire since there is nothing over the top in the phone and the title of super phone changes every month with the speed at which companies come out with new phones.

LG Optimus 2X is the closest competitor for A85. The specs of Optimus 2X are slightly better than the specs of A85 but the price difference of 6000 clears it all. Also, in an age where the discussion goes from Samsung Galaxy S2 to quad core phones like HTC edge and Meizu MX, this phone from Micromax can hardly be called super phone in the real sense of the term.

Micromax is known to be a cheap phone manufacturer. Its phones have always been affordable and have had useful features (dual SIM) and innovative designs. Going from under 10k to an over 15k category straight away is a very bold move by Micromax and it may backfire if not handled properly. In an effort to change its image, a similar thing was done by Spice mobile when they launched their Spice Mi410 at 14K.

What will be interesting to see is whether Micromax is able to shed its low cost image by this move. Only time will tell.
