It’s interesting how technology plays a vital role in the world that we live in. On one side, the American parents worry if their child is on Facebook, on the other side, Egyptian parents have started naming their children as “Facebook”.

This strong liking for Facebook has increased tremendously because of strong communicating power of “Facebook” in the events surrounding #Jan25 revolution. According to Al-Ahram ( which is the most popular newspaper in Egypt) an Egyptian man who is in his twenties has named his first born daughter as “Facebook” as a tribute to the role played by the website in organizing the protests in Tahrir Square.

Al Ahram facebook named babygirl Egypt #jan25

Translation of the above:

A New Day

Man Names His Newborn Girl Facebook

A young man in his twenties wanted to express his gratitude about the victories the youth of 25th of January have achieved and chose to express it in the form of naming his firstborn girl “Facebook” Jamal Ibrahim (his name.) The girl’s family, friends, and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region gathered around the new born to express their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook. “Facebook” received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name. A name [Facebook] that shocked the entire world.

Egypt is the country having the maximum number of users of Facebook than any other country in the Middle East and North Africa. It has around 5 million Facebook users. Around 32,000 Facebook groups and 14,000 pages were created on Facebook from Egypt in just two weeks after January 25, 2011.

It is strange how the world would look with the names of babies as “Facebook”, “Google”, “Orkut”, “Twitter” or “YouTube”. In a class when all these students would sit together to study, all the rival companies would be sitting together and making friends with each other, like “Yahoo’s” best friend in the class would be “Google”. It would be strange but witnessing those moments would be a great experience.

Jokes apart, in our opinion, internet has really changed the way the world functions and we owe a lot to the developers of social media websites. Let’s see what more in store for us in future.
